TOLEDO ZOO RECEIVES GRANT FOR AQUARIUM RENOVATIONS

A six-figure grant from a federal agency will allow the Toledo Zoo to complete renovations at their historic aquarium.  The Institute of Museum and Library Services has awarded the Toledo Zoo nearly $146,000.    The Zoo’s aquarium improvements will likely take through 2014 to complete, making the debut for the aquarium sometime in 2015.

This grant will help provide for new interactive touch tanks, including one for sharks and stingrays, and another for invertebrates like sea stars and sea cucumbers.   When the Toledo Zoo Aquarium opened as a Works Progress Administration project in 1939, it was the largest freshwater aquarium in the world.
